The Story of Castlerock Railway Station (A Unique Stay on the Causeway Coast)

Few places let you stay inside history quite like Castlerock railway station, one of the oldest and most characterful buildings in the village. Originally opened in July 1853, the railway first brought life and connection to this stretch of the North Coast. The current station building, constructed in 1874, replaced an earlier structure and still stands today as a lasting piece of that history. The red brick building, with its distinctive ornamental detailing, was designed by architect John Lanyon, son of the renowned Sir Charles Lanyon, continuing a family legacy of railway architecture across Ireland.

For over 170 years, Castlerock Station has welcomed travellers, holidaymakers, and locals alike. The railway played a vital role in shaping Castlerock and the wider North Coast. It opened up the coastline to visitors from across Northern Ireland, making it easier than ever to experience seaside towns like Castlerock and Portrush.

Thanks to the railway, generations of travellers have discovered the area’s sweeping beaches, dramatic cliffs, and Atlantic views. These landscapes have long inspired creativity, influencing writers and poets such as C. S. Lewis and Seamus Heaney, whose connections to the North Coast are woven into their work.

Today, that same spirit of travel and discovery continues. By transforming the station into a welcoming place to stay, we’ve given the building a new purpose while preserving its past and ensuring it still serves travellers just as it has done for more than a century and a half.

If you’re looking for somewhere unique to stay on the Causeway Coast, Railway Sleeper Hostel offers a chance to be part of that story. Stay in history, embrace adventure, and perhaps feel a wee bit of inspiration along the way.
